How the Cloud Looks from the Top: Achieving Competitive Advantage In the Age of Cloud Computing
Case Summary:
When Harvard Business Review Analytic Services researched surveyed industry professionals, including business leaders and chief information officers (CIOs), found that those organizations that are weary about using the cloud will look to their CIOs to make key decisions about implementing cloud services. In the survey conducted, it was found that CIOs were the most confident in their understanding of cloud computing; thus, these CIOs are responsible for educating management and IT departments about the merits of cloud services. Amongst the top concerns associated with cloud computing, data security, reliability, and legal issues were rated as the top three organizational concerns. In addition, senior-level managers indicated the topmost reasons for nonuse of cloud services are that it is “too risky” and the lack of strong value proposition. Nonetheless, the future of cloud computing remains bright as the factors listed to most likely sway organizations into cloud services are: improve understanding internally, proof of good security and reliability, and cost management.

Advantages & Disadvantages of Cloud Computing
Advantages:
- Increases capabilities without investing in new infrastructure, training new personnel, and licensing new software
- Easy to set up and get running
- Cheaper: no need to buy new software or update software
- Less labor intensive, installed online remotely
- Offers virtually unlimited storage compared to that of hard drives
- Security: the company's reputation is important, thus cloud computing highly prioritizes protection of clients' data effectively
- Different countries have different security measures, so some require the physical storage of data and information thus one must be careful of where to store their information in regards to legal security laws
- Privacy: authentication is used so user can access data only relevant to user's needs
- Affects overall industry: less need for IT repair/maintenance, thus changing the structure of IT industry
- Recovery: physically stored somewhere, if lost, retrieval depends on how cloud provider will respond
